How to Lessen Moving Costs

Simply put, moving is stressful and expensive. Moving costs can range from $1,000 to $9,000 depending on how it’s done. If that sounds like a lot of money you don’t have saved, we have some ideas to help take care of the costs.

Timing is Everything

Lugging boxes through the snow doesn’t sound dreamy — especially when you think about your big move, but it will help with moving costs. If you have flexibility with the timing of your move, avoid the popular summer months and the last weekend of each month, as these are the most expensive. As you would with any major life decision, make sure you do some research. Compare at least three estimates from professional moving services and don’t forget to ask about shifting your moving dates, as this could mean less money out of your wallet.

Lighten the Load

When you downsize, it means fewer boxes (yay!), and lower moving costs, especially with the professional moving company. You might even have some things that you forgot you had until packing day. Donate or sell items you don’t use, or that won’t fit in your new place — but keep your kitchen items. Pots and pans are easy to pack, but expensive to replace. You might want to consider shipping your books, it’s usually cheaper because of the flat mailing rate, and it opens up more room in the moving truck.

Personal Loans

If you don’t have the savings for your moving costs, you might want to consider a personal loan. It’s not hard to apply, and if you have good credit and steady income, you’re a shoo-in. Sometimes lenders allow you to pre-qualify to check your rate and terms before committing to a loan. Personal loans usually have lower rates and higher loans than credit cards — plus maxing out the credit card for a move isn’t the best idea if you want to live debt free.

If you’re looking for ways to help with moving expenses, consider DEXSTA Federal Credit Union for a personal loan. All of our personal loans are simple interest without prepayment penalties. Credit unions are special because we personally review your credit reports and own situation. Decisions are made at the branch, so call, walk in, or apply online, and have the money in your account the same day.
